Mingendi, Simbu Province – In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare accessibility in the region, the Marape-Rosso government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to delivering quality health services to all citizens, regardless of their location or political affiliation. This strong message was delivered by the Minister for Health, Hon. Elias Kapavore, during the recent Accreditation ceremony held at St. Joseph’s Rural Hospital in Mingendi.
Minister Kapavore assured the people of Simbu that geographical challenges would not deter the government’s efforts to ensure health service delivery. “The government of the day is here for you, and will make sure health service is delivered,” he stated emphatically.
On behalf of the government, Minister Kapavore also acknowledged the vital role of the Catholic Health Services of Papua New Guinea (CHS) as a key partner in the nation’s healthcare system. He recognized CHS’s significant contributions not only to health but also to education and religion across the country.
The Minister’s visit to Mingendi was specifically aimed at identifying areas for improvement within the health sector. He expressed his disappointment regarding the 18-year delay in the accreditation recognition for St. Joseph’s Rural Hospital at Level 3. However, he provided a strong commitment to rectify this, stating that he would urge the relevant department within the National Department of Health to fast-track the accreditation process. The goal is to officially recognize and certify St. Joseph Rural Hospital as a Level 4 District Hospital before June 2025.
Minister Kapavore emphasized that the current government is not focused on past shortcomings but is firmly committed to future progress in healthcare. He underscored the government’s prioritization of health and urged Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs) to continue developing data-driven plans with clear justifications for his attention, assuring them that his role is to secure the necessary funding. “Don’t say there’s no money and we have to wait. Government will still fund you,” he affirmed.
In a landmark announcement, Minister Kapavore highlighted the government’s unprecedented commitment of 239 million kina specifically to address manpower and workforce issues within the health services – the largest such investment in Papua New Guinea’s history.
Under his leadership, Minister Kapavore outlined his ongoing efforts to reset the Public Health System to build public trust and confidence. He acknowledged the valuable support being received from the Asian Development Bank and the Australian Government in these crucial efforts. He stressed the importance of national ownership in addressing the country’s challenges, urging citizens to speak positively about their government and work together. “We are here for each other,” he said.
Looking towards the future, Minister Kapavore shared promising news for patients with critical illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, and heart conditions. He announced that with the current facilities available in Papua New Guinea, these patients will no longer need to travel overseas for treatment.
Finally, Minister Kapavore commended the Simbu Provincial Health Authority for its leadership in the Highlands region in advancing health services.
This commitment from the government and the progress towards accrediting Mingendi Rural Hospital to a Level 4 District Hospital signifies a positive step forward in ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for the people of Simbu and Papua New Guinea as a whole.
