The Simbu Provincial Health Authority (SiPHA) officially launched its 2025 Polio Vaccination Campaign in Kundiawaon August 13, 2025, joining the nationwide effort to protect Papua New Guinea’s children from the resurgence of poliovirus. The launch, held at the heart of Simbu’s capital, brought together health workers, community leaders, faith-based organizations, and international partners in a shared mission: to ensure no child is left vulnerable to this preventable disease.

At the launch, SiPHA’s CEO Dr Kassi Ken emphasized the importance of community support: “This is not just a health campaign, it helps to see that our kids are vulnerable. He iterated that when kids are healthy and strong, their future is promising. Every child vaccinated is a life protected and a future secured.”

The Deputy Chairman of SiPHA when speaking iterated that “For this vital Polio vaccination campaign to run smoothly and reach every child in Simbu, the onus is on all of us especially our communities to take full ownership. This is not just a government initiative; it’s a shared responsibility. I urge ward leaders, landowners, and service providers to support our health teams without imposing unnecessary fees or barriers. Charging for access, accommodation, or transport during a public health emergency undermines the very mission we all stand for: protecting our children. Let’s work together in the true Simbu spirit with generosity, unity, and purpose.”Simbu’s rugged terrain poses logistical challenges, but health workers are undeterred.

For many in Simbu, the campaign is deeply personal. “We remember the fear of the 2018 outbreak,” said a nurse in Gembogl. “This time, we’re ready. We’re not just vaccinating we’re building a legacy of health.”

As the first round unfolds, the province stands united health workers, parents, pastors, and policymakers each playing a role in safeguarding Simbu’s children. The second round, scheduled for late September, will reinforce this shield of protection.
